Week one in Vancouver: A real Canadian Hockey Game!

Hockey game in Vancouver
Hello from Canada. We made it, we survived our 24+ hours in transit. And as our week ends we are just starting to feel human again. Because our time is kind of open ended we haven't run in full throttle like we normally do. On Thursday we caught the train into Vancouver and got ourselves Social Security Numbers and then spent the day there. That night we met Murray, one of our hosts, for a "real" Candian hockey game! Calgary Vs Vancouver, it was pretty good, even though I had no idea what was going on most of the time.

Friday was another similar day, we got our Canadian bank accounts and went on a hunt for some nice casual boots for me (with success!)

On Saturday our hosts, Beth and Murray, took us to Granville Island for most of the day. We had great waffles for lunch and saw the worst play ever...

Ducks on a stream
On Sunday we took a stroll to the bird park nearby and fed some ducks.

Today (Monday), Murray took us to Grouse Mountain early to do the Grouse Grind. It took us about 1hr 40mins and Murray about 53mins (well probably exactly 53mins). It was very hard, just uphill steps the whole way. But the path is well marked and the weather was lovely, so a really nice hike. The view was pretty good from the top.

On the Grouse Grind
We then drove to the "Sea to Sky" gondola. Which has a better view from the top, but the walk would take much longer because it is a much longer walk than the Grouse Grind. I would probably recommend it over the Grouse Grind for tourists though. There are a lot of walks at the top and a suspension bridge, but we didn't have time to properly explore it.

The view from the sea to sky gondola beats the grouse mt view
Tomorrow we will probably ride around Stanely Park, so long as it's sunny. Then we head to Calgary!

Update:
Today we went to Stanley Park via the Skytrain. We're staying in Delta so it took us about an hour to get into town. We opted not to hire bikes, which is the usual thing to do, since it wouldn't take long to go around the park. So we walked. And Brandon gave another homeless person $5... There are so many homeless in Vancouver. We didn't walk the whole way around the park either, kind of zig zagged through it. At one stage we walked off the path to have a look at a squirrle, and realised we had stumbled into the middle of someone's home... super awkward. There was a little stick shelter and stones making a path. So we (mainly I) rushed out of there and put some distance betweeen us and it. We found another one later on too...
There's some massive trees in the park, and because the root system only needs to be super shallow due to all the rain, there are some that just toppled over. You can see all the roots and they are less than a metre into the ground for a tree about half the size of the one in the photo.

Everyone we've spoken to in Vancouver has been like "why are you going to Calgary?". It's quite funny, everyone here thinks it's too cold anywhere but BC.

Anyway, that's all for now!
