After Yellowstone we stayed one night at the Walmart in Gillette, and scored a free shower at the city pool because it has free entry. We were pretty pleased with ourselves that day! We detoured a little to go to the "Devil's Tower", which is just a big rock. We didn't actually go in, since we could see the rock from the outside so it didn't seem worth the entry fee. Excuse the smudge on the photo below, I think it was a bug on the windscreen...
We then headed on to Mount Rushmore. It was a $10 "parking fee", which means you can go there for a year for that price. I have no idea why you would want to go more than once, it is what it is. Some heads carved into a cliff. Cool, but not really something you need to see more than once...
Our final stop of the day was the Badlands National Park.It was interesting and really different from everything we've seen before. The flat grasslands suddenly just drop away into these crazy rocky formations, and then there is another area of flat grasslands that starts at the bottom. It isn't as"big" as I was expecting, it's more of a narrow band of weird rocks that divides one flat grassland from another.
There were a few very short walks within the park, but we didn't do any as we were pretty tired by the time we got there. We just stopped at most of the lookouts, jumped out of the car, and took a few photos.
The colour bands are actually pretty impressive, considering I haven't edited any of these photos.
We stayed the night at a small campground just outside the south end of the park. It is one of the worst we've stayed at. I had a shower and then when Brandon went to have one, they had stopped working. So we wasted a bunch of coins trying all of the showers, and we ended up showering under a tap... Then he was in a dreadful mood for the rest of the night... The office only opened from 10am to 5pm, so there was no hope we were going to get any help there either... Oh well... at least the wifi was good!
