Pictured Rocks National Lake Shore
We spent a couple of days at Pictured Rocks National Lake Shore in Michigan, which ended up being a big disappointment. Partially because our kayak trip got stormed out, and partially because there's not much to do there.
We spent most of the first day trying to find a camping spot, being Friday night everything was booked. We ended up with one 40 minutes away, and had a terrible experience with a super rude man when we returned to our spot that night (which apparently was not our spot, and it was our fault we had left our bikes in the wrong spot, despite having been told that number).
On the first day we did a few walks to some waterfalls, which were pretty average, given that there in not a lot of elevation there. This area really needs nice, sunny weather to appreciate the beauty. As you ca see, we did not get sunny weather. The best way to appreciate the colourful rocks is from the water, and as I said, our kayak trip got cancelled. My recommendation would be to only go here if you plan to do a kayak trip. All the walks are flat and wide (the parks people drive golf carts around on them), but you are not allowed to cycle them. It would be nice for cycling, but it is dead boring walking!
After getting up early and finding out our kayak trip was cancelled, we tried to enjoy the area from land. We did a walk to the Au Sable Point Light house, which was super boring. Once we got there we wandered around for a bit, before discovering a massive patch of blueberries. So we spent some time in there, and then turned around to go back. There are tours of some of the buildings there, but it looked like it was going to bucket down so we wanted to get back to the car pretty quick.
And it did bucket down, absolutely pour, for hours. So at that point we ate our subway (purchased for our kayak trip) in the car and drove to Sault Ste Marie to spend the night in a motel.
