A surprise powder day at Red Mountain

Yesterday we drove to Trail to stay the night before skiing at Red Mountain. We woke up to 20cm of fresh snow on the ski hill! We were both so excited; it feels like it's been forever since we were skiing in powder. And man, is it awesome to ski powder again. It was a bit heavier than true winter powder, but it's just like skiing on a cloud!

I love Snow Ghosts!
We got to Red Mountain at about 10am, and the top of the mountain was closed until about 11am for avalanche control. That meant pretty much everyone was on the bottom two lifts, but it still wasn't crowded. By lunch, however, the bottom of the hill was super skiied out and not nice. After lunch we went up to the top and headed over to the right side. The advertise that you can ski off the top of the main mountain 360 degrees. That is a bit misleading. I would say that you can do that at Whitefish, but here you have to take a cat track to get to the sides and back of the mountain. The chairlift doesn't exactly drop you on the top of the peak, so you have to go around the peak to get to the different sides. Which is fine, but it's not really what they are claiming.

We had a lot of fun skiing off the Grey Mountain Chair, but the cat track to get there from the top of Granite Mountain is just awful. So, so flat. The only other option is to go down double blacks. Even though the black diamonds were pretty chill, I didn't want to try a double just in case. The blues at Red Mountain were very easy and some of the blacks were not even as steep as blues at Fernie. It's so hard to know, because all the hills rank their runs themselves, so a black on one hill might equal a blue on another.
Anyway, we had a great time smashing through the trees in a bit of heavy powder. I would definitely recommend Red Mountain, just be prepared to cat track at the top and/or at the bottom of every run at the top of the mountain.

Having a lay down from all the pow!
