Skiing Silverstar: the family hill

The last couple of days we have been skiing at Silverstar, which until now, had been my top pick for next year. Neither of us are terribly excited to spend a whole season there though.

Brandon's face shows how we really feel, my face is a lie

I would say Silverstar is a great hill to learn to ski at. There are heaps of long blue and green groomed runs to cruise down. However, the black and double black runs are not very steep. The thing we liked least about it was that the trees were so thick you couldn't ski through them. They had a few "glades" but they may as well have been open runs with how few trees were in them. I think because we both really enjoy tree runs, we just wouldn't be able to do a whole season there. The good thing about trees you can ski through, is that even after the main runs have been skiied out after powder, the trees often have nice powder between them.

I feel like over the two days we skiied most of the hill, and saw mostly what it had to offer. We tried a big upper mountain glade 3 times trying to find a good run through it. It is marked on the map as a black diamond, but the gradient would be green, or barely blue. you pretty much had to point straight down the hill to be able to go, and even then you might stop. Most of their other glades are lower mountain, so in the current spring conditions are not even worth trying.

Your full day lift pass also includes tubing, which runs from 4pm tp 9pm, so you can go after you have finished skiing. Which is a great idea, considering tubing is like $40 at Lake Louise. We went tubing after skiing on our first day, and it was surprisingly fun! It would be a great family hill because of all the other activities they offer. It does feel rather commercialised though, and like they have sacrificed inn terms of the ski hill, in order to have a heap of ski-in-ski-out condos.

In good conditions, I think you could have a lot of fun on the black runs at Silverstar, but otherwise it's a little limited. It's just not the hill for us to spend the whole of next season at. The search continues!
