Vancouver Island - Back to the East

Our first bear!
We woke up to drizzling rain in the morning. Not what we wanted, but what we were expecting. We drove down the road to Ucluelet to do a walk near the light house. There's a privately made walk called the Wild Pacific Trail that runs around the headland and then has another section along the coast.

We drove to the lighthouse area first, and fought the rain to hike the walk. The lighthouse is a bit of an ugly one, but it was an enjoyable walk. We stopped at some shops afterwards and a local told us he had seen some wolves in the area recently, so Brandon spent the whole of the next walk looking for wolves.

Ucluelet is very artsy with a lot of street art carvings
We liked Ucluelet a lot, it had a nice vibe to the town, and felt small but was super interesting. There were heaps of statues and wood carvings on the street, and a lot of cute little shops with interesting Canadian souvenirs. I bought a glass banana slug :)

The rain was intermittent but, when it was raining, the wind would just whip it into our faces so that we couldn't stop at any of the lookouts to see the ocean.

Hiding from the rain

Near the end of the cliff area walk
At the end of the cliff area walk, we had to turn around and walk back again. It's not a very long walk, but it's probably the longest in the area, other than the West Coast Walk (which is a week long walk or something). It's also quite different to the walks near Tofino.

After we finished the walk, we decided to head back to Nanaimo, since we felt we'd done as much as we could in the area. The rain increased as we drove inland, and we spotted a black bear chowing down beside the road. We stopped and did a u-turn to get some pictures, and he was completely non-fussed about us being there.
