We headed off at a reasonable time, for our first stop, Joffre Lakes. We knew there was a change there would be some snow there, but we didn't expect so much. As we got out of the car, it started snowing, and I put on some thermals.
The bottom Lake |
There are 3 Lakes, with the bottom only a few minutes walk from the car park, the next a few kilometres and then a short distance to the final one. With how much snow there was, we pretty much knew we wouldn't be making it all the way. We chatted to a few people, who were just as surprised as us at how much snow was still around. Everyone keeps telling us it's been a really cold and long Winter this year. I'll say! It's meant to have been Spring for like a month!
I love walking in the snow, it's just so serene. We made it about halfway to the second lake before we decided to turn around. The track, that had bee quite well worn and packed, turned into more of a ski track. And we could see an area where the snow had slipped down the hill ahead (like a mini avalanche), so we thought it probably wasn't the safest either.
The Lakes are a beautiful blue when the sun is out, so we missed out on that, but it was still a fun little walk.
We carried on, past another half frozen lake, to Lillooet, where the scenery significantly changed. It went from heavily forested to baron gorges, literally after turning a corner.
Blue Lake near Lillooet, notice the brown tree-less hills |
After a lunch stop at the green lake near Lillooet, we carried on driving, pretty much until we got to Kamloops. Stopping for the occasional photo of course.
After restocking in Kamloops, we drove about an hour North to our campground for the night. a quiet little place nestled between the highway and a train line...
