Onwards and Upwards: Historic Hazelton

The next stop along our way was Prince Rupert. We didn't do much there, other than buy food and sleep in a pretty gross camp ground. Seriously... I had to move dog poo out of or camp site. And most of the other tent sites were so waterlogged that the water would squish up over your shoes as you walked! So, I don't think it needs a blog of its own!

We pulled in to Old Hazelton the next night, to stay at the native run K'san camp ground. This one was much nicer than the camp grounds in Prince Rupert!

Right next door to the camp grounds is the K'san Historic Village, which has a collection of long houses and totem poles. Unfortunately, because it's early season, nothing was really happening there and we couldn't go in to the long houses. It was kind of just a walk past the buildings, not really knowing what they're all about... We were wondering why everything looked like it needed some new paint, but have since found out that repairing and repainting is not really done. There is a small museum there that is quite interesting, considering how small it is.

We walked back to the camp ground and then into town, because the overly enthusiastic owner had said the town is done up like "the wild wild west"... It was pretty depressing to walk around town. Obviously a lot of money has been spent to try and give the town a touristy atmosphere, but most of the shops were empty and boarded up. So it was not really very nice to walk around, and we made our way back pretty quickly.

We set off at a lazy pace the next morning, aiming to get to Dease Lake for the following night. The predicted weather was getting colder the farther north we went (who would have thought), so we booked in at a motel with a kitchen. The next morning we woke up early to get going, because google says it is 8 hours driving from Dease Lake to Whitehorse. This is definitely a dramatic overestimation, and even with stops it only took us about 8 hours to get there.
Some of the sights to come in the next post!
